Thrift Store Therapy

I haven’t been shopping in ages. I was starting to get withdrawals! For a week all I could think about was browsing around at Target with a coffee and a shopping list. And every thrift store I drove past whispered my name, I swear. It was a pleasure to stop by a Goodwill and thrift it up. I didn’t really need crooked glassware, but I did feel the need to see some and the rest of the miscellaneous junk treasures.

Look at THIS lady! Quite the haircut on the weird board game cover model. I declined purchasing the game, though it did still include the directions after all these years since that hair style could have passed for a good idea.

Ooh la la, fancy shoes. I rarely get to buy shoes at the thrift store because I have such large feet that nothing fits. I was lucky enough to find some Born heels in my size awhile ago for $15. Score! If these green ones had fit, I totally would have snagged them. I did end up with a bag in a similar color, though.

More Martha Stewart teacups! Three more for my previous found teacup set. I haven’t broken any of the others (yet), so I’m all set to have eight friends over for tea.

I’m thinking about finding a record player so that I can pick up hilarious and ridiculous and sometimes awesome thrift store records. It would be like high school all over again. I don’t know about Don Ho, but Wanda Jackson music is timeless.

Third Summer for the Stock Tank Pool

The time has come again to prepare the stock tank pool for another summer. It will be our third year with it already! It’s weathered in nicely, I’ve made some adjustments to the connections, mixed up the ways I treated the water, thought about and against many further adjustments, and fielded a number of email inquiries about it.
The stock tank pool is still the ideal set up for us. Imagine if we had a big blue vinyl thing in the backyard all this time. It might have been a little warmer (I hypothesize that the metal reflects the heat from the sun, therefore keeping the water temperature in the pool positively frigid at all times), but I highly doubt the lifespan of the vinyl could come close to competing with the galvanized steel on looks or sturdiness. Though we’ve dealt with leaking connections, that’s pretty much the only issue that comes up.

We started out with plumbers putty on the exterior of the tank at the hose connections. It intermittently leaked and eventually dried out a bit. Last year, we added some bolts and neoprene gaskets, covering the connections with PVC cement. It dried out a bit as well, flaking off where it was thin, but did a decent job of preventing leaks. Later in the summer last year, I covered the outtake filter hose connection with a two part epoxy, and this one seems to be the winner. Between the gasket, the bolts, a couple layers of the PVC cement and a generous application of the epoxy. I tried a silicone sealant
on the intake hose connection, and that’s not quite working as well as the epoxy, maybe because of the slightly bent gasket on that part. But, a little trial and error, a little exposure to high VOC cement, has been worth a lot of cold soaking in the pool.

I must say that one of the most fun and rewarding parts of the project is filling it up at the beginning of the summer. I take a seat right next to it and watch the water rise.

New Favorite Summer Lunch

The tuna melt, my new go-to, easy lunch. I spotted this on a blog somewhere along my travels through the internet, and knew it would be mine. My version of “Emeril’s Kicked-Up Tuna Melt” didn’t turn out quite as gorgeously golden as the recipe photo, but it was a satisfyingly crisp/soggy/ warm and savory lunch. With a soda or a beer, this sandwich has summer written all over it.
