About

Since the spring of 2009, I’ve been writing Waldorf Modern, sharing the way we live Waldorf at home.

Besides concentrating on how to fit Waldorf into our lifestyle, I also write about modernism, minimalism, the house, and family. We try to make it work in our mid century ranch style home in Sonoma County.

Commonly Queried Queries

What is Waldorf education?

To me, Waldorf education is about simplicity, nature, and learning how to learn. Wikipedia has an article all about the history and pedagogy. My favorite parts of Waldorf are the cyclical curriculum, farming, cooperation, and teachers’ multi-year commitment.

Do you have a tv?

Yes, and lots of computers. Some Waldorf families skip televisions and other technology. We allow the kids to watch tv or a movie on the weekends. Mine and the husband’s jobs are in technology, so we’ve got screens scattered about the house.

When was your house built?

It’s a 1953 ranch style home, in a neighborhood of somewhat similar houses. There is a variety of styles and layouts in the neighborhood, but a lot of the houses have the same oak flooring. The subdivision was built by Hugh Codding, the big local developer of the day.

The house is still in mostly original condition, I suspect all the tile and flooring are original. The living room and the husband’s office are an addition, probably added in the 1970s or 80s.

Where did you get your furniture?

Ikea and thrift stores. A couple other things are from other places, Scandinavian Designs, Design Within Reach. We built a couple of bookshelves and Bean’s desk.

Who did your website?

Me! I do web development and design, specializing in bespoke WordPress websites.

I’m visiting Santa Rosa, where should I go?

We have great food and theatre scenes around here. Try to see a show, and go out to eat. Stark’s if you’ve got some dough, Adel’s for diner fare, Bistro 29, Arrigoni’s for lunch. Hana, in Rohnert Park, is my favorite for Japanese.

I’m visiting Santa Rosa, wanna go thrift shopping with me?

Absolutely. Send me an email. I’ll spring for coffee.
